Fortified Data CEO Ben DeBow to Present at IT/Dev Connections 2016

ben-eventsFor 15 years, IT/Dev Connections has been recognized as the premier professional training and networking conference for the Microsoft technology community. At this year’s event, Fortified Data’s founder and CEO, Ben DeBow will be discussing a number of topics that you absolutely can’t miss.  He has designed, optimized and deployed some of the largest SQL Server solutions in the world. In his spare time, he can be found traveling the world, speaking at various conferences and most likely has BBQ smoking out somewhere close. Join us!

Session 1: Logical, Physical, Does Database Design Really Matter?

The database schema is like a solid foundation for a house, if you want an application that will scale, perform well and be able to support the application growth, then you need to have a strong database design. What is important when you are designing a new data model that needs to support thousands of users and terabytes of data? How does the schema design impact the server resources like IO requests and the memory efficiency? How do the SQL Server features like data compression, new data types and in-memory capabilities impact your database design? By the end of this session, you will have a solid understanding on how you can design a data model that will take advantage of your infrastructure and leverage the new SQL Server features.

  • Goal 1 – Learn how database design impacts the hardware
  • Goal 2 – Learn what features impact the database design
  • Goal 3 – Learn how data model impacts your application

Session Time: Tuesday, October 11, 2016: 9:15 am – 10:30 am, Data Platform and Business Intelligence Track

Session 2: DevOps Is Coming To A Company Near You

Companies are creating more and more technology service offerings but they are often throttled by IT. To address this, many IT departments are adapting a new concept called DevOps. DevOps is a concept which has quickly risen from niche to mainstream within the IT Enterprise. At its core, DevOps represents a way to leverage people, processes, and tools to remove barriers and improve service delivery. An understanding of scripting and automation platforms is becoming a critical skill for SQL Server professionals. This session will discuss how technologies such as virtualization, the cloud, and software-defined data centers have blurred the lines between developers and sysdmins. We will also talk about the competencies and tools required to succeed in an increasingly data-driven workplace.

  • Goal 1 – Learn how to change the process to align with DevOps
  • Goal 2 – Learn to work with other teams and how to better integrate
  • Goal 3 – Learn how to build and deploy technology solutions quicker

Session Time: Tuesday, October 11, 2016: 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm, Data Platform and Business Intelligence Track

Session 3: Anything but: Troubleshooting When It’s Not SQL Server

Here we go again, the SQL Server is slow but where is the problem. Is there a large blocking chain or a high number of deadlock events? Maybe it is a slow query using a large number of resources? Does the query have a non-optimal execution plan? Many times as a DBA, we ask these same questions and answer NO to all of them because the performance issue is outside of SQL Server. In this session, we will focus on troubleshooting all of the typical issues that are not SQL Server related but impact SQL Server. We will explore troubleshooting virtualization, storage, memory, CPU, OS and networking issues.

  • Goal 1 – Learn more about infrastructure
  • Goal 2 – Learn how to capture data about infrastructure issues
  • Goal 3 – Learn how to correlate data with SQL Server data

Session Time: Thursday, October 13, 2016: 10:15 am – 11:30 am, Data Platform and Business Intelligence Track
